As Swimmers Fled Violence, Widely-Shared Picture Shows Rescuer Sprinting ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the famous shoreline as her back yard. On a recent weekend night, she, along with numerous local residents, detected cracking sounds reverberating through the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. She left her apartment, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore signaled trouble had occurred.

While standing on the street, speaking to a couple who had run up the incline soaked, she noticed someone coming up at her rear. It was a lifeguard, sprinting to Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was the only one heading in the direction that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that certainly every part of you would tell you to run in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally full throttle running.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery During Chaos

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of heroism in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and ambulance crews treating dozens of those hurt.

Community Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the incident transforming into a impromptu treatment center. It was shared that other team members were also seen taking action, such as going into the water to save people who were struggling.

Following the attack, messages of support circulated widely. One post shared gratitude for the responders who showed that “goodness will always conquer hatred”.

The squad of rescuers issued a message, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful words and encouragement. We are touched by the care for our team,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it helps those involved.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many full-time beach safety officers, remarked that the crew performed exceptionally from the moment the shooting started right into late that evening.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” commented a council representative.

“These individuals show altruism every day in ensuring our internationally renowned shores protected for visitors, but what we observed on that evening should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the terror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much light we have observed in the face of such evil.”
