Israelis commemorate second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have assembled around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on that day.
He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed state memorials until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to produce any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- A permanent ceasefire
- The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- Post-war administration of the territory
Civilian Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young a woman - whose family member endured the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No place seems like home any longer and until all the hostages return no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.
Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the families of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Activist Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to return. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israelis want the conflict to conclude in return for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From that location, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.
"Once the evening falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"My family are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the remains of six people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area reported additional fatalities had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get help to the southern area, medics reported.
