Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
