The Last of Us Director's New Game That Looks Very Different Yet Evolves Familiar Concepts.

Bruce Straley behind The Last of Us has unveiled a new venture into game development. The upcoming game, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, represents the inaugural effort for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, and it draws heavily from his past achievements prioritizing dynamic AI partners.

An Unlikely Duo Embarks on a Unique Journey

Revealed at a recent industry showcase, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a character-puzzle-platformer. The game follows Gertie, a character who subverts typical power fantasies. This central concept came from a goal to rethink standard narrative tropes.

"Imagine if you were without traditional weapons? What if your character was physically limited? What if you’re a little old lady?" posed the creative lead. "I thought it was deeply interesting to question the definition of a protagonist. A hero is about persevering against challenges, but it’s also about selflessness and unwavering will."

The Reactive Companion: A Spiritual Successor to Ellie

Although this project looks different on the surface, its most significant advancement is a direct continuation the technology pioneered in The Last of Us. This whole endeavor was inspired by a key thought: "How could one create Ellie truly living and learning to the player?"

The companion creature that accompanies Gertie is far from a scripted follower. It is essentially a curious child that reacts with evolving behaviors. Initially, it investigates its surroundings, resulting in playful hijinks. Next, it tries to copy what it sees. In the end, it analyzes to understand grasping cause and effect.

  • To illustrate: Should the beast observe an object being placed, it learns the motion absent the context.
  • Subsequently, it may attempt to collect various things and test fitting them, mimicking the behavior.
  • True comprehension arrives when it stumbles upon solving an obstacle, creating a genuine learning moment.

A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative

Such advanced AI aims to foster individualized narrative moments. The director emphasizes that this project will be a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure as opposed to a traditionally structured narrative.

"Anytime I tried traditional three-act structure for this project, the excitement fell apart," he stated. "The true vitality of this relationship stems from how each individual player are going to have personal anecdotes and outcomes than I will."

By prioritizing player-defined experiences, the new title signifies both a continuation and a bold new direction from Straley's well-known franchises. The project remains in development for computer systems.
