The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
