The Reze Arc Movie Leads the U.S. Cinema Earnings in Opening Weekend

Has Sony repeated their success? Following the triumph of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in in excess of $600 million globally, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the $100 million milestone internationally, hitting a international earnings of $108 million during its debut. This feature outperformed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its sophomore frame in cinemas, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring actor Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Impressive American and Worldwide Results

Helmed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It earned $18.2M in the U.S. after a strong $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5M Sunday take. Overseas, the MAPPA-produced film added nearly $15 million across 46 global regions, pushing its worldwide total to $60.4 million under Sony ($43.1 million international, $18.2 million in the U.S.). Sony has yet to announce its official box office total.

Benchmarks to Past Anime Hits

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment previously spoke, comparing the movie's expected results to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made $34M in the North America in 2022 and debuted with a nearly identical eighteen million dollars domestically. This movie's debut weekend is in line with that standard, while its $108M worldwide total is now positioned a bit short of Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s over $166 million final run. While it is improbable Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will earn the box office of mega hit the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for the studio.

Marketing Strategies Drive Success

The studio and its partner Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged fan engagement to drive their leadership at the animated movie market. This film's advertising push began at the Anime Expo in LA in summer with a MAPPA panel, unique experiences, and photo opportunities with Pochita, followed by a notable appearance at New York Comic Con including behind-the-scenes footage, fan raffles, and additional MAPPA panels. There was even an exclusive fan screening for moviegoers and content creators as well after the concluding day of the convention.

What’s Next

2025 stands as a major time for Japanese animation, and for Sony, which has another animated movie premiering this year in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
