This Diamond Family Alternative Gaming of the Year Roundup for The Past Year
Well, what did you think of 2025 in your home? Did it seem truly wonderful as one might claim on social media? Full of top marks for your offspring and riotous dress-up celebrations for the parents? Or was it a ocean of frustration with only occasional fun moments? Could any part be authentic, or is everyone now AI-generated virtual entities with unrealistic smiles?
I've assembled the family for a reflection, whether they wanted to or not, to reflect on the most important thing in any given year: which releases we enjoyed the most. Let's get started:
Release Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"You can't expect my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate decent healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In the actual world."
Title Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. Fair enough.
Game Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into acting, but when she wasn’t singing, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where the Shark has a blooming utopia with significantly better healthcare than her big sister has in the real world.
Release the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Release I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he objects, I reply that I am engaging in this to prepare him so he can grow up and play games for grownups. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. Even better than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted deck building wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that endlessly add to their range is you eventually realize and realise it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a legendary franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my demons so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just lacked the mental bandwidth to give it what it required earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I will be playing this in the wee small hours after appropriate hospitality.
Title That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was last year's surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is incredible. It just gets each element right. Its gameplay loop is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different wild cards are so inventive it has become a game I literally would play at any hour. Combine that with the cleverness of the card design, and this is an absolute high-water mark of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Game I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a wave of criticism when I wrote about how a glitch in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I appreciated even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I mention that in the exact way, because I acknowledge the engagement, and he is obviously an astute judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a brutally difficult Metroidvania-esque thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". What a joy. I understand that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my mid-fifties. I was around back when many games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was fine when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Toss-up between corporate partnerships that caused concern, and high launch costs. Both difficult to justify and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names called from the back door at dinner time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or phone use, but it is sore like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
