This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a prosperous future without fear.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: vibrant, varied, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
