UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
